NEWCASTLE OPEN DOUBLES
'THE MARCEL LINARES MEMORIAL'
'THE MARCEL LINARES MEMORIAL'
The Newcastle Open Doubles, also known as The Marcel Linares Memorial, is the premier annual pétanque tournament hosted by the Newcastle Pétanque Club.
Held at Nesca Park in The Hill, Newcastle, this prestigious event attracts top-tier players from across Australia and further afield.
To some it is considered the most important competition on the Newcastle calendar.
The tournament honours the late Marcel Linares, a pétanque enthusiast who helped grow the game of pétanque in Australia.
Starting in 2015, the event is a celebration of competitive play, sportsmanship, and the vibrant community spirit which Marcel was a firm supporter of.
Marcel's sons, along with their friends, make the annual trip to Newcastle to take part in this special event. They lead by example in showing us how competitive and social play can combine to make great events happen.

'The Linares' strikes the perfect balance between serious competition and a relaxed, social vibe. While top talent from across Australia comes to play, the event is just as much about camaraderie, laughter, and shared passion for the game... and perhaps a pastis or two!
Whether you're aiming to win or to simply enjoy the experience, you'll find a welcoming and inclusive competition.
The weekend features:
A friendly and light-hearted competition.
A picturesque setting within Nesca Park, just minutes from Newcastle’s beaches and cafes.
Good food, great company, and memorable pétanque moments.
It’s a competition where players shake hands before and after each game - and where many stick around afterward to share a drink or a story.
If you don't like having a good time, don't come!
