"BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER, ONE THROW AT A TIME"

Sammy Boudan, joined his parents at today’s training and decided to have a go himself. Great to see the next generation already getting a feel for the game!

The final day of training is underway at the Newcastle Pétanque Club, with the Oceania and NSW interstate teams putting in some serious work!
Yesterday, the teams gathered at Teralba for an intense session where they experimented with multiple team combinations and took part in shooting practice.
Today, attention has shifted to the pointing competition and fine-tuning team combinations to ensure everyone is dialed in for upcoming events.
This training isn’t just about sharpening technique and strategy - it’s a vital opportunity for team building. With Australia being such a vast country, many team members don’t often get the chance to see each other in person. Sessions like these allow players to develop on-court chemistry, strengthen communication, and build the kind of cohesion that only comes from shared practice.
A huge thank you to everyone involved in making this training possible. The dedication, focus, and camaraderie on display are what make these teams truly special.

Our Friday Night Social had a touch of the Queen’s English tonight 🇬🇧…
Shane Howarth (QLD & technically a proud Newy member) and Graham Smith (ACT) joined us for a roll-up.
Both are part of the Australian Oceania team training in Newcastle this weekend - though with those pommy accents, you’d be forgiven for thinking we were in Newcastle, England! 🏰
Good thing the boules don’t care what accent you’ve got… as long as you can land them close and hit them far.
Welcome lads - the Aussie team might sound imported, but they’re very much homegrown on our pistes. 🇦🇺

What a brilliant day we had at the Newcastle Pétanque Club for the 2025 NSWPL Gender Triples Championship! 😁
The weather could not have been better - sunny skies and perfect playing conditions made for a fantastic atmosphere, both on and off the pistes. ☀️
Players, officials, and spectators alike enjoyed a day filled with great competition and sportsmanship!
This year’s championship brought together 8 Women’s teams and 9 Men’s teams from across New South Wales.
Each team played 4 qualifying games, with the results determining who progressed into the knockout rounds.
The top 4 teams in each gender moved into Division A, while the next 4 progressed into Division B, giving every team a chance to play meaningful finals and compete for honours.
A special acknowledgment must go to the volunteers who helped ensure everything ran smoothly behind the scenes. From organising the pistes, running the draw, feeding the competitors, umpiring, and keeping things moving — Neville Smith, Jan Smith, Alan Whittaker, Melva Fleming, Jan Le Brun, Delys Brady, and Neil Brown (please let me know if I missed anyone!) - thank you for your time, effort, and commitment. Events like these don’t happen without the contribution of our dedicated helpers, and the club is very appreciative! 👏👏👏
After some hard-fought finals, we congratulate our winners:
✨ Results

A big thank you to Delys Brady, who conducted today’s Umpires Course with 4 participants today, and to Neil Brown, who led the Coaches Course with 7 participants.
Both Delys and Neil generously gave their time, energy, and expertise to guide participants through the theory and practice of their roles. Their dedication helps raise the standard of umpiring and coaching across NSW and supports the continued growth of pétanque in our state.
Congratulations and sincere thanks also go to all those who took part in the courses today. By committing their time and effort, they are not only building their own skills but also giving back to the wider pétanque community.
These courses were organised by the respective Commissions and brought together players from across NSW to further their skills and qualifications.
Meanwhile, Newcastle members enjoyed the sunshine with a strong turnout for practice ahead of tomorrow’s competition.

Looks like the Pasha Bulker has decided to drop anchor once again in Newcastle and this time at our pistes! 🌊⚓️
Our dedicated committee might not own a tugboat - but have plenty of optimism for better weather ahead. 🤞
Here’s hoping for clear skies and dry pistes this Sunday when we host the 2025 NSWPL State Gender Triples Championship.
Sunshine, boules, and some top competition - now that’s the forecast we’re all hoping for! ☀️🎯
And a special shout-out to everyone taking part in the umpires and coaching courses tomorrow – best of luck! Your efforts keep our game fair, fun, and growing. 👏

Round 2 of the Spring Season kicked off today with plenty of boules on the ground and good spirits all around.
Unfortunately, the weather decided it wanted to play too - and not in our favour!
By the time we got into the second round, the skies opened up and the competition had to be called off! 😭
All registered players will receive 1 point.
No need for clever edits or AI trickery this week… the photos speak for themselves.
Wet pistes, soggy boules, and a bunch of very determined (but very damp) players.
We’ll regroup and be back on the piste next Sunday for the 2025 NSWPL STATE GENDER TRIPLES CHAMPIONSHIP, hoping for sunshine and a full day of play without interruption! ☀️

What a fantastic evening at NPC - a flying success! 🌙
16 players on the piste, 52 boules in action (a few more for shooting practice) and one cheeky flying fox who was hanging out to watch some quality pétanque action! 🦇
It was the perfect night for pétanque - cool air, great company, and surprisingly not a single drop of rain in sight.
Next Friday we’ll be running a Pointing Skills Session from 3:00–4:00 pm. 📅
Whether you’re new to the game or want to sharpen your accuracy, come along and join the fun.
Everyone is welcome! You’d be batty not to! 😏

Our members headed over to the Boules Artistes Open Doubles today... only to get 25 minutes in before the heavens opened and the day was called off. 🌧️
Some said even the boules were looking for umbrellas. ☔️
Not the result anyone wanted, but at least we can say all members were undefeated.
Take care on the drive back along the M1. 🚗
The event has been penciled in to be reheld 28 September 25, keep that Sunday free.

🎯 WINTER SEASON POINT SCORE UPDATE! ❄️
Can you believe we’re already 9 rounds in? Just three more to go before we crown our 2025 Winter Season champions, and the competition is heating up despite the chilly weather! 🔥
Here’s how things are shaping up on the leaderboards:
👑 Women:
🥇 Lulu Arjava – 35 pts
🥈 Delys Brady – 33 pts
🥉 Melva Fleming & Rosemary Wall – 27 pts
👑 Men:
🥇 Logan Romani – 40 pts
🥈 Timothy Stevenson – 37 pts
🥉 Joe Tomassetti – 26 pts
And for the overall Club Champion tally (where all those points across the year really matter!):
✨ Women:
🥇 Lulu Arjava – 84 pts
🥈 Delys Brady – 78 pts
🥉 Liliane O'Connell – 72 pts
✨ Men:
🥇 Timothy Stevenson – 92.50 pts
🥈 Logan Romani – 84.50 pts
🥉 Kierran Clarke – 70.50 pts
Plenty of room for some leaderboard shake-ups over the final rounds. So polish those boules, bring your A-game, and let’s see who finishes winter on top!
Or if your like me, and enjoy the current standings, channel a certain famous politician… “STOP THE COUNT!” because I’m in front and quite happy to stay there!
But hey, keep those games rolling - I still need the practice (and honestly, it’s way more fun trying to hold onto the lead with all of you chasing me down! 😜).
🎉 Good luck everyone - and most importantly, keep having fun out there!
Season Champion Calculation
1. Eligible Scores: The best 9 out of the 12 Saturday Competition scores are tallied to determine a player’s season total.
2. Season Champion: The player with the highest total points from their best 9 scores is declared the season champion. If multiple players have equal scores the below tie-breaker provision is used to determine ranking.
• Tie-Breaker:
o If tied, the best 10 results are considered.
o If still tied, the best 11 and then all 12 results are considered as necessary.
o If still tied after the above, the tie will stand.
Club Champion Calculation
The Club Champion is determined using:
1. Season Results:
o Each player’s best 9 scores from each of the three seasons are tallied. These scores are added to create a cumulative season score.
2. Club Championship Day Points:
o There are five designated Club Championship days throughout the year. Points are awarded for each event based upon the final rankings as per below:
▪ 1st place: 7 points
▪ 2nd place: 5 points
▪ 3rd place: 2 points
▪ 4th place: 2 points
o All participants receive 1 point for attendance in addition to the above performance points where applicable.
3. Overall Calculation:
o The cumulative season scores (from all three seasons) are added to the points earned from Club Championship days. The players (both men and women) with the highest combined total is crowned the Club Champion.
o There is no tie-breaker provision, therefore dual winners can be awarded.

We had 32 players turning out for our Club Singles Championships - with 18 men and 14 women taking to the pistes.
In fact, we were so close to running out of pistes (with all in use!) - it’s clear just how much everyone is enjoying their pétanque right now. 😍
Great to see so many keen players and supporters around the clubhouse!
🏆 Two brand new champions were crowned today:
Chris Boudan is our new Men’s Singles Champion, after a nail-biting final against Bronson Romani. Chris clinched it 13-12 in what can only be described as a stunning showcase of skill and nerves under pressure! 😎
Cathy Ayre dominated the Women’s Singles, putting on a masterclass throughout the day - she didn’t have more than 5 points scored against her in any of her 7 games. That’s seriously impressive consistency and focus. 🤩
👏 A huge thank you to all our wonderful volunteers and helpers today.
Alan Whitaker
Neville Smith
Jan Smith
Bronson Romani
Rosemary Wall
Delys Brady
Neil Brown
Liliane O'Connell
Plus so many others! (please comment if I've missed anyone)

A special shout out as well to everyone who brought delicious food from home or helped out on the BBQ. It’s the effort and community spirit of everyone involved that makes these days so special. 🙌🙌🙌
The atmosphere around the clubhouse today was just as good as the action on the pistes - plenty of laughs, good banter, and the kind of friendly competition that reminds us why we love this game! 💙❤️
Thanks to all who played, watched, helped, or just popped down to enjoy the sunshine. Can’t wait to do it all again. See you on the piste!

It is with a heavy heart that members of Newcastle Petanque Club announce the passing today of our former club member, Mario Wende. A few weeks ago he was on holiday enjoying his other great passion, fishing, when he suffered a very serious fall which required him to be airlifted from a northern hospital to the John Hunter Hospital Intensive Care Unit. He was still in hospital struggling to recover when he succumbed to a consequence of his injuries late this afternoon. Our deepest condolences are with his partner, Rosa, her mother Tina, her aunt and uncle Linda and Joe Tomassetti, and their extended family.
A nine times Club Champion and winner of many individual Club Championships, Mario loved playing Petanque and could be found at the club every Wednesday and Saturday afternoon, arriving early and leaving late, and on occasion playing all day Sunday in club championships at the club and in Sydney. After 20 years, he took a break from the game about 2-3 years ago. By accounts he was thinking of returning to the game.
Mario was a big personality at the club: a fierce competitor, sometimes quick to become annoyed, yet patient and encouraging with older players and new members. He loved a good laugh, a couple of cold beers, his food, his red and, after that was stolen, his purple holden utes. He partnered many current members at the club and playing with him was always a memorable experience, and often you came away with a prize. He and Rosa enjoyed a TransTasman (the previous TT comp) holiday in Auckland with several other club members around 2006 or 2007 and what a fun time we had. There are lots of memories from our 20 years of Petanque with Mario. The photos may help you share some of those moments.
Fly high Mario. Rest In Peace.

We’re thrilled to launch our brand new weekly Friday Night Pétanque, and we’d love for you - your friends, your family, and even your neighbours - to come along and help make it a huge success.
🕓 When: Every Friday, 4pm to 7pm
Turn up whenever suits you. If you can get there right at 4, fantastic! If work holds you up or you want to wander in closer to 6, that’s perfect too. The more people we have on the piste, the more fun it is for everyone.
🌙 Picture this:
The lights are on, the palm trees are gently swaying, and the sun dips into a soft evening sky.
Boules are clinking, there’s laughter across the terrain, a can of your favourite non-alcoholic beverage, and the week’s stress is already forgotten.
All around are friendly faces - people you’ve played with for years and brand new players giving it a go for the first time.
🎯 All skill levels welcome!
Whether you’re a long-time shooter or you’ve never touched a boule, you’ll be right at home. We’ll help get you started and make sure you’re part of the fun.
🥤 Make it a social outing.
Bring some snacks and bring a mate - or come solo and meet new people. It’s all about unwinding, enjoying the game, and building our wonderful community.
💪 But here’s the honest bit:
For Friday nights to survive and grow into something special, we need you there.
More players means more games, more laughs, and more reasons to keep the lights on and make Friday pétanque a permanent fixture.
If you want it to continue (and get even better), the simplest way is to show up.
📍 Where: Newcastle Pétanque Club
🎉 When: Every Friday, 4pm – 7pm (or whenever you can get there)
So dust off your boules, round up some friends, and let’s kick off the weekend in style.
Spread the word, tag your crew, and we’ll see you on the piste!

On a personal note, I want to give a big shout-out to my partner Bronson Romani – who was absolutely on fire today. 🔥 Bronson shot brilliantly from start to finish and made my job as a pointer very easy. Always a pleasure to share the piste with you, mate!

Pétanque Australia has just announced the national team selected to represent Australia at the 2025 Oceania Championships, taking place in the island territory of Wallis and Futuna from Thursday 16 to Sunday 19 October 2025!
We’re absolutely thrilled to share that four (that's right 4!) members have earned their place on the team!
🌟 Bronson Romani 🌟 Yili Han 🌟 Delys Brady 🌟 Lynne Arjava
They’ll be heading over as part of the elite 8-player squad, proudly representing Australia alongside:
🇦🇺 Graham Smith (ACT) 🇦🇺 Eric Carbonell (WA) 🇦🇺 Meredith Clark (NSW) 🇦🇺 Shane Howarth (QLD)
This is a massive honour and a true testament to their hard work, dedication, and outstanding performances over the past year/s. Selection to wear the green and gold on the international stage doesn't come easy - and we couldn’t be prouder of each of you for rising to the challenge.
To Bronson, Yili, Delys, and Lynne - you carry not just the flag of Australia, but the support and admiration of everyone here at the Newcastle Pétanque Club. We'll be cheering you on from home as you compete against the best in Oceania!
Time to bring the flair, the focus, and that famous Newy determination! 💪💙❤️
And hey team - if you get a spare moment between games, make sure to visit Lake Lalolalo, the giant volcanic crater lake surrounded by lush jungle. It’s one of Wallis Island’s most stunning natural sights - deep, mysterious, and shaped like a perfect circle... kind of like the perfect landing spot for a well-thrown boule!
Enjoy the competition and the adventure!
💚💛 Go Team Australia!

Congratulations to Louie Tattooie - our lone Newcastle representative at the Solstice Singles in Canberra Petanque - who took out the Complémentaire Division! He only lost 1 game all day! 🏆
On a fresh Canberra Sunday, Louie showed the same steady hand and sharp eye he brings to his art works. Singles is one of the toughest formats, demanding a full range of skills - and he handled it brilliantly!
Still under 12 months into his pétanque journey, Louie's energy and dedication are already turning heads. A great result and well deserved - well done, Louie! 💙❤️💙❤️

(And yes, someone PROBABLY did start singing Bon Jovi when I said that.)
With today’s competition all wrapped up, we’ve officially hit the halfway point of both the Winter Season and the 2025 Club Championship Series! 🤭
There’s been sweat, sledging, and a few suspicious “accidental” boule knock-outs - but the standings don’t lie. Here’s where things sit after months of glorious (and occasionally chaotic) pétanque action:
🌨️ Winter Season Standings
(aka who's been dominating Nesca Park RECENTLY and who’s just there for the FRESH WINTER BREEZE)
MEN:
🥇 Logan Romani – 29.00 pts
Logan’s out in front, flexing form, flair, and family bragging rights.
🥈 Joe Tomassetti – 21.00 pts
Never count out Joe - precise, persistent, and probably plotting.
🥉 Franco Romani – 20.00 pts
Just behind his son… and probably pretending it doesn’t bother him.
🏅 Camillo Bertaglia – 17.00 pts
Silently lethal and always lurking just outside ready to strike.
🏅 Neville Smith – 17.00 pts
One big comp away from causing chaos (and maybe a cheeky podium finish).
🏅 Alan Whittaker – 17.00 pts
Equal fourth and quietly throwing bombs. Watch this space.
WOMEN:
🥇 Leanne Nicholls – 24.00 pts (tied)
Leading the charge with steely focus and sneaky spin.
🥇 Lulu Arjava – 24.00 pts (tied)
Calm, classy and casually collecting points like it’s a hobby.
🥉 Rosemary Wall – 22.00 pts
Consistency queen with her eye on the top spot.
🏅 Linda Tomassetti – 18.00 pts
Flying under the radar with solid form and sharp throws.
🏅 Delys Brady – 18.00 pts
Tied for 4th and definitely not finished climbing.
🏆 Club Championship Standings
(aka who’s making a serious play for eternal Newcastle pétanque glory)
MEN:
🥇 Timothy Stevenson – 70.50 pts (tied)
Powering through the championships with spreadsheet precision.
🥇 Logan Romani – 70.50 pts (tied)
Yes, he’s leading both comps. Yes, we’re all a little worried.
🥉 Kierran Clarke – 67.50 pts
Still in striking distance and known to finish strong (and loud).
4️⃣ Franco Romani – 59.50 pts
Climbing the charts with the classic Romani flair and just a touch of drama.
5️⃣ Gary Gilmer – 50.50 pts
Silently stalking the leaders like a cat with boules.
WOMEN:
🥇 Lulu Arjava– 72.00 pts
Top of both tables. Top of her game. Somebody stop her.
🥈 Jan Smith – 63.50 pts
Solid as a rock and ready for a second-half surge.
🥉 Delys Brady – 62.00 pts
Firmly in the mix and always dangerous with momentum.
4️⃣ Liliane O'Connell – 59.30 pts
Precision, poise, and plotting her path to the podium.
5️⃣ Rosemary Wall – 53.50 pts
Climbing both ladders like it’s a casual Saturday stroll.
So what’s next?
More comps. More boules. More movement on the ladder.
Everything’s still up for grabs - and if history tells us anything, the second half of the season is when it all gets spicy.
📅 Next Championship: NPC Club Singles 6th July 2025 — don’t miss your chance to climb, conquer or completely blow it in style.
Full standings attached!
You've got to be in it to win it!
Curious how the point score system works? 🤔

Newcastle Pétanque Club – Gender Doubles Championship Monday 9 June 2025
While most were still in bed enjoying a public holiday sleep-in, 18 brave teams (10 men’s and 8 women’s) turned up ready to battle the elements and each other for the club’s prestigious Gender Doubles Championship titles!
It was a day of fierce competition, howling wind, and freezing cold – but nothing could dampen todays play. And as always, the day delivered big moments, close games, and a brilliant showcase of skill and camaraderie.
🏆 MEN’S CHAMPIONS – Scott Clarke & Kierran Clarke
They’ve only gone and done it AGAIN AGAIN AGAIN!
Scott and Kierran secured their fourth consecutive title, showing why they’re the team to beat in Newcastle. Whether it’s finesse, strategy, or just plain consistency – these two continue to reign supreme on the piste. Long live the Kings!
👑 WOMEN’S CHAMPIONS – Delys Brady & Linda Tomassetti
Make way for new royalty!
Delys and Linda claimed victory, defeating 2024 champions Sharleen Boudan & Rosemary Wall in a gripping final. A well-deserved win that adds a fresh chapter to the club’s women doubles champions! God save the Queens!
📜 Full results and photos attached
I believe Franco Romani may post some photos also, so be on the look out!
🎯 Special thanks go to:
Delys Brady and Neil Brown for umpiring throughout the day with their usual calm and clarity.
Jeffrey Roberts for stepping in as a last-minute substitute, showing true club spirit - only given 10min notice to show up!
And to our morning tea heroes – Melva Fleming, Pam Ewart, Jan Lee Brun, Alan Whitaker, Rosemary Wall, Liliane O'Connell, Linda Tomassetti (and myself) – who baked, bought, and bundled up to deliver a delicious spread that kept everyone's sugar levels high in challenging conditions!
(Let me know if anyone was missed or deserves a shoutout!)
🗓️ This event also replaced our usual Club Picnic Day, and we kept the tradition alive with a free sausage sizzle for all members. Thank you to everyone who pitched in, cooked, cleaned, and helped the day run smoothly. Thank you Neville Smith & Peter Ryan.
Despite the weather, this year’s Gender Doubles Championship reminded us all why it’s one of the most anticipated and competitive events of the year!

🎯 Did You Know? | Memory Rewind ⏪
Back in January 2004, a group of determined members from the Newcastle Pétanque Club set a Guinness World Record for the longest pétanque marathon – playing for an epic 27 hours and 30 minutes straight! 😲
Where? Not on a fancy piste… but at the Kotara McDonald's restaurant! 🍟
They raised over $6,000 for Ronald McDonald House at John Hunter Hospital in the process!
It all happened on 24–25 January 2004, and the record was officially recognised by Guinness World Records.
A huge hats off to those passionate pioneers who showed the world what Newcastle pétanque spirit looks like – rain, hail, or fries! 😂
As of now, the Guinness World Record for the longest pétanque marathon is held by 12 members of Gilles de B’Heinsch from Toernich, Luxembourg. They achieved an impressive 52-hour continuous game from 18 to 20 September 2009, with players organised into four teams of three .

"High-stakes play, Laid-back vibeS - That’s the Marcel Linares!"
The Newcastle Pétanque Club invites you to one of Australia’s most iconic pétanque weekends - the Newcastle Open Doubles aka. The Marcel Linares, happening October 4–5.
This is the event that strikes the perfect balance:
Elite-level play for those chasing titles, and a welcoming, social vibe that brings the whole pétanque community together.
What’s in store:
• Friday evening warm-up – meet, mingle, and warm up with casual games and cold drinks
• Saturday and Sunday competition – sharp, strategic pétanque at the highest level, with teams from across Australia and perhaps further afield
• Top facilities, great atmosphere, and that signature Newcastle hospitality
• Cash prizes, prestige, and your name on the trophy for those who rise to the top
• Spectators welcome - bring your friends, family, and biggest supporters
Whether you’re a serious competitor or love the game for its friendships and spirit, The Marcel Linares has something for you!
Speaking of something, Kierran Clarke and Esh Teeka have dominated The Marcel Linares three years running - cool under pressure, ruthless on the piste, and unbeatable when it counts.
The question is: can anyone stop them this year? If you think you’ve got the team to break their streak, there’s only one way to prove it - register, show up, and take your shot!
Play hard. Laugh loud. Compete with heart.
This is The Marcel Linares! Be part of it - Don't miss out!

We're trialing timed games to explore the opportunity to enhance the flow and competitiveness of our Saturday competitions.
The standard 3 games format will remain the same, however all games will be timed.
Timed Game Format:
Duration: 50 minutes plus one additional end.
Scoring: First to 13 points or score at the end of the timed period.
Key Rules:
A new end is considered to have started when all boules of the current end have been played (not when the jack has been thrown).
At the 50-minute mark, complete the current end and then play one additional end.
If the game is tied after the additional end, play one more end to determine the winner. In this end, the jack cannot be killed. If the jack travels into an out of bounds area, it is placed back on its last marked location.
The jack must be marked at all times. I.e. when first thrown / placed and each time it is moved or touched.
All strings are dead boule lines. When throwing the jack there is no minimum distance from the side strings however, it must be at least 50cm from the back string.
Feedback:
On completion of this competition, players will be encouraged to complete a brief survey.
This feedback is important and may help guide the committee in making future decisions.

Huge congratulations to our very own Kierran Clarke, who – with his teammate Raja Jamaleddine (SA) – has taken out first place at the 2025 L'International Queensland Open Doubles (hosted by Brisbane Pétanque Club), held this weekend in not so sunny Nerang.
One of the toughest comps on the Aussie pétanque calendar, attracting players from interstate and overseas... and they’ve gone all the way to the top!
Outstanding performance from both players – you've done the club proud!

After a long wait, the NSW Pétanque League announced at the 2025 NSWPL State Mixed Triples Championships the 2024 State Champions - and we’re proud to celebrate one of our own!
🔥 Kierran Clarke is the Open Men’s State Champion! 🏆👏
It’s no surprise to see Kierran take out the title - he’s a fantastic player who consistently performs at the highest level and always seems to find his way into finals. A well-deserved win!
We also congratulate the other 2024 champions:
🏅 Ariadne Ernest – Open Women’s Champion
🏅 Susan Begley – Over 60s Women’s Champion
🏅 Jean-luc Domergue – Over 60s Men’s Champion
A big well done to all competitors. The level of play last year was outstanding and a great reflection of the talent across NSW.
Kierran is also the sole Newcastle representative at the 2025 L'International Queensland Open Double in Queensland this year, and we wish him good-luck! 🍀

Today, 18 members made the trip down the M1 to Sydney to represent the club at the 2025 NSWPL State Mixed Triples Championship, hosted by the always-welcoming Prestons Pétanque Club (AMA).
We’d like to give a huge thank you to our friends at Prestons for their fantastic organisation, warm hospitality, and excellent food. It’s no small feat running a competition like this, and your club always does it stress-free and with a welcoming smile. We’re also incredibly grateful to the volunteers, umpires, and officials who kept the day running smoothly from the first boule to the last. Your hard work, attention to detail, and dedication to the sport don’t go unnoticed. Events like this simply wouldn’t happen without you - merci! 👏
The weather was mild and cloudy, making for comfortable playing conditions throughout the day - and although we had a pleasant day yesterday it is still a welcome change to the heavy rain many of us experienced back home this past week. It was a great opportunity for our players to test their skills against strong competition from across the state, and we’re proud of the effort and spirit shown by all our members even if we didn’t have the best results.
📸 Scroll down for club results and some happy snaps (thanks to Lulu Arjava for playing photographer) from the day:
Christopher Boudan / Sharleen Boudan / Timothy Stevenson - Lost Semi Final of Consolante
Scott Clarke / Kierran Clarke / Susan Clarke - Lost Quarter Final of Principale

There have been multiple sightings of rogue Crocs around the Newcastle Pétanque Club in this crazy weather.
While they may look harmless, we urge all members to proceed with caution - especially near the pistes. (Seriously stay safe.)
One wrong step and you might find yourself toe-to-toe with an aggressive reptile or a dangerous sandal in sport mode. 😱👟
That said, Round 3 of the Winter Season – Mixed Triples is on tomorrow, and we’re hoping the Crocs have moved on to warmer waters. 😉
Come along for a great day of pétanque, and hopefully some sunshine - bring your game face (oh and maybe your safest footwear). 🌞
Lastly, a big bonne chance to our 18 legends heading to Prestons in Sydney this Sunday for the 2025 NSWPL State Mixed Triples Championship!
Play hard, play fair, and show them how Newcastle rolls (preferably not in Crocs and socks though). 🏆🎯

Good luck to our Newcastle crew competing in the Canberra Pétanque Team Challenge this weekend! 🥇
Kangaroos might be known for hopping onto the pistes down at Canberra Petanque, but this 'mob' is the real danger: Yili Han, Neil Brown, Vivienne Brown, Lulu Arjava, and Melva Fleming are bouncing in with precision, power, and plenty of pétanque swagger. 🦘💥🎯

With the pistes underwater and the forecast looking grim, we’ve called off the 2025 Gender Doubles Championship for now. ❌
Please share with your playing partner to ensure all players are aware. 🙏
The weather might have won the battle today, but the real contest is just delayed. ☔️
The competition will be rescheduled to a reserve weekend later this year — plenty of time to sharpen your shooting and polish your pointing. 🎯
There’s still a title to be claimed… and bragging rights up for grabs! 🏆
So think of it as bonus practice time… or a free pass for a Sunday sleep-in and a long lazy lunch. 😴
Stay tuned for the new date — and stay hungry, teams. 📅
Until then, stay dry and save your winning shots for another day! ✨

What a fantastic evening at the club!
At least 20 players and 2 furry friends joined us for a beautiful evening of pétanque with plenty of smiles and great social play.
The atmosphere was relaxed, the games were fun, and the good vibes were flowing!
We’ll let the pictures speak for themselves - but with turnouts like this, maybe Friday night pétanque should become a more regular thing… 😉
Thanks to everyone who came along!

The team looking pretty schmick in the Newy red and blue!
Not a bad result considering the team was only formed during the week!

A successful day 1 for our 9 Newcastle members playing in the Wollongong Masters this weekend.
The Romani family leading the charge!
Today we played 6 rounds of qualification throughout challenging conditions.
The start of the morning saw a huge down pour of rain, we were unsure if the competition would go ahead… or even if we’d make it to the pistes!
Finally, just as the competition was about to start, the sun started to shine through.
Patches of rain and the humid sun continued all afternoon, meaning the pistes were constantly changing.
Member Standings (after Qualification):
2nd Kierran Clarke / Logan Romani
7th Franco Romani (with Peter Masri)
8th Bronson Romani (with Desire Vencatasamy)
11th Yili Han (with Chantrea Oum)
14th Gary Gilmer (with Jean-Luc Gonnet)
18th Alison Pietersen / Timothy Stevenson
30th Cathy Ayre (with Adele Smith)
Top 16 into Principale, balance in Consolante for tomorrow.
Thank you WOLLONGONG PETANQUE CLUB & Leon Benivento for the photos.
Update to come tomorrow.

Thirty club members enjoyed themselves at the annual presentation lunch at Brown Sugar Restaurant at Warners Bay.
As usual, Brown Sugar staff looked after us very well providing a great venue in the functions room! Catering for the two-course lunch was, again, excellent. Delicious, well-presented food delivered by friendly staff.
Presentations were completed at intervals between the courses. We also played a few games, had lucky seat winners (Joe and Jan S) and a lucky door prize (Marg).
Heads and tails proved that Kim was the smartest on the day!
Two rounds of cup ping-pong were heaps of fun with the top winners of club tokens going to Pam and Perry with about 14 others winning at least one token.
The search is already underway for next year!
A summary of presentations this year (some will be made at the club for those unable to attend the lunch) were:
15 non-Saturday winners received a small gift
38 Saturday winners received a variety of prizes of their choice (shirts, jackets, vests or tokens)
THE DIANNE FARNES MOST IMPROVED AWARD
Recipient – Melva Fleming
Season Points Winners
WOMEN
Summer – Kim Threadgate
Winter – Delys Brady
Spring – Delys Brady
MEN
Summer – Ken Farnes
Winter – Chris Boudan

Thank you to Fritz & Jackie for your delightful hospitality!
Thank you to Meredith & Jean Luc for organising and running the competition.
Nothing better than playing pétanque with a refreshing glass of wine!
The sun was out and so were the Roos… probably thinking ‘who are these fools, playing in this heat!”.
Newcastle being well represented! Claiming 3/4 prize winning positions!
2nd Principale: Bronson Romani & Timothy Stevenson
1st Consolante: Logan Romani & Scott Clarke
2nd Consolante: Delys Brady & Lulu Arjava

What’s better than watching top tier pétanque?
Watching it under the stars.. while your own club superstars are on the big screen!
Chris. Kierran. You guys might be on the other side of the world, but that doesn’t mean Newcastle isn’t behind you.
Thank you to all members that attended and made it an enjoyable and relaxing evening!
Kerrie Maddern & Petanque Australia thank you for making this event possible with your live streaming. It’s very much appreciated.
Allez boys, bring it home!

Today 10 NPC members (and 1 cute mascot) represented Newcastle at the 2024 edition of the NSW Interclub Challenge!
Boules Artistes, at their Randwick Boule-o-drome, played host to a wonderful day of competition!
The result was not known until the last round where both NPC teams were in contention for the title!
After all games were done, Newcastle 1 was victorious, not losing a single game all day!
Newcastle 2 finishing a not-so-distant 3rd.
This is a fantastic result for the club, given there were 8 teams from 4 clubs across NSW.
A big shout out to the volunteers of Boules Artistes for organising and donating their time to run the competition!
A nice way for Newcastle to get behind each other and also bid bon voyage to our 2 Australian representatives. Hopefully they take some Newy teamwork and sportsmanship to Dijon!
Congratulations Newcastle!
