2026 CLUB CALENDAR NOW AVAILABLE
"BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER, ONE THROW AT A TIME"
25/01/26 - by Timothy Stevenson
Round 1 of the Summer season - and the first of the year - got underway today with a fantastic turnout of 37 players contesting Gender Doubles in warm conditions.
With the temperature climbing, the water cooler made an appearance to help keep everyone comfortable and performing at their best this afternoon
Play followed shortly after the Members Forum, which by general consensus was an overwhelmingly positive session.
With the new committee now settling into their roles, they outlined several focus areas they’re looking to develop in 2026, while also providing an update on what has already been achieved in just the past two weeks. It’s clear there has been plenty of work happening behind the scenes to get the ball rolling.
Members were advised that the club website will now be the primary source of official information, with Facebook continuing as a supplementary communication channel.
Members were also offered the chance to provide feedback on the club calendar, which was released last weekend.
Sharleen addressed members with an important reminder about club culture — encouraging everyone to appreciate one another, show respect, and put a stop to gossip. A timely message that reinforces the kind of club environment we all want to be part of.
The committee also shared results from last weekend’s Wollongong event, keeping members in the loop with our players’ outstanding performances beyond the club.

In significant news for the club’s future operations, the committee announced a move to further embrace technology.
The club will soon be purchasing a computer, monitors, and related accessories to support competition management and club administration.
This initiative is being made possible through the generous donation of 𝗗𝗮𝗿𝗿𝘆𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗹𝗲𝘆 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻, who have offered to purchase this equipment for the club.
This is a substantial contribution that will benefit members for years to come and is a wonderful example of the support and community spirit that helps our club continue to grow.

Just wanted to let you know about a competition in Avoca (Victoria).
Refer to mypetanque for a promotional flyer for the 2026 Pyrenees Open Doubles Tournament (Avoca), to be held over the weekend of the 21-22nd March.
This event, including details on the play format, has now been posted on mypetanque.com
I have also been informed that Catherine Kernot and Jennifer Parsons (from Sydney) are looking for a third lady to compete in the women's triples at the nationals in Adelaide in April. If anyone is looking for a team, please let me know and I can put you in touch.

Newcastle players made their presence felt at the 2026 Wollongong Masters this weekend, producing outstanding results across multiple divisions while competing in extremely hot conditions.
A big thank you to the Wollongong club, the umpire, and all volunteers who delivered such a well-run event despite the challenging weather. Conditions were testing, and the work behind the scenes ensured a fantastic tournament for all players.
A club photo was taken during the day, capturing the strong Newcastle contingent who travelled to compete.
In a moment that summed up the club spirit, Chris Boudan bought icy poles for everyone to help cool down in the heat — exactly what was needed to keep Newcastle refreshed and firing heading into the finals.
Standout Results
Newcastle featured prominently in the results:
Logan Romani and Kierran Clarke finished equal 3rd in the Principale, continuing their strong form in top-level competition.
Timothy Stevenson and Chris Boudan claimed 1st place in Division B, a terrific performance across the weekend.
In an all-Newcastle showdown, Lynne Arjava and Kim Threadgate defeated Cathy Ayre and Yili Hann in the Principale Women’s Final, ensuring the title returned to Newcastle.
Alison Pietersen, playing with Adele Smith (Canberra), won the Women’s 3rd Place Playoff against Susan Clarke and Victoria O’Connor (Boule Artistes).
Mel Fleming, partnering with Catherine Kernot (Boule Artistes), won Division B Women after qualifying 1st on Day 1. At 90 years of age, Mel’s achievement is remarkable and an inspiration to all players.
Neil Brown made the semi-final of Division C, adding another strong Newcastle result to the weekend.
It was also pleasing to see competitive performances from all other Newcastle members who made the trip.
Congratulations to everyone who competed and represented the club with determination in very tough conditions.
A weekend to be proud of for Newcastle.

Good luck to our 19 members competing in this weekend’s Wollongong Masters Doubles, to be played over both Saturday and Sunday.
This tournament is always a key fixture on the calendar and traditionally marks the first major event of the year. It consistently attracts a strong and diverse field, providing an excellent early-season test for players across all divisions. And as always, Wollongong’s hospitality will be second to none.
Can Kierran continue his Open Doubles demolition, or will other Newcastle representatives rise to the challenge and make their mark? With plenty of local talent in the mix, there will be no shortage of competitive encounters.
A quality field, strong representation from Newcastle, and, as always, a great weekend of pétanque ahead!
Bonne chance.

The Newcastle Pétanque Club held its Annual General Meeting at 12:30 at the club house, immediately followed by a Members’ Forum.
The meeting was well attended by club members, providing a good opportunity to review the past year and discuss matters relevant to the club’s operations and future direction.
A new committee was appointed as follows:
President: Christopher Boudan
Vice President: Allan Phillips
Secretary: Sharleen Boudan
Treasurer: Leanne Nicholls
Sports Officer: Bronson Romani
Maintenance Officer: Trevor Priestley
Catering Officer: Peter Ryan
Following the AGM, the newly elected committee held a brief discussion before the day concluded with a two-game competition organised by the Sports Officer.
